Who We Are...
|
 |
Rod Barnes, MD, and Joni Lawrence, RN
A native Kansan, Rod Barnes was born in Ottawa, although he
considers Council Grove to be his hometown. During his high
school years in the 1960s, he dreamed of living in
California. Later, in his college years, he wanted to call
Colorado home. But soon thereafter, he realized the beauty of
Kansas and has never thought twice about his decision to stay in
the state.
|
|
Dr. Barnes
studied pre-med at Kansas State
University and still bleeds a little purple after almost 30
years of being a Lawrence resident. He obtained his medical
degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in
Kansas City, after which he completed a residency in Family
Practice in Wichita at Saint Joseph Hospital (now know as Via
Christi). In 1978 he moved to Lawrence and has lived here ever
since.
|
During his medical career of
nearly 30 years, Dr. Barnes has maintained an active Obstetrics
practice, having delivered more than 3,000 babies. He also has
had a particular interest in Sports Medicine, recently passing
an American Academy of Family Practice exam for an advanced
certificate in the specialty.
Dr. Barnes entrusted his nursing
responsibilities to Joni Lawrence, RN, nearly 30 years ago. That
relationship continues today and provides continuity of care. |
 |
With his
wife, Mary, Dr. Barnes has four
grown children and two grandchildren that keep both of them very
busy. He continues to pursue an adolescent passion for vintage
sports cars, muscle cars and motorcycles. And he has managed to
remain healthy enough to play on a city league softball team for
the past 25+ years, which he plans to quit only when he runs out
of excuses for poor play.
"It is my sincere privilege to be
associated with my partners at Lawrence Family Medicine and
Obstetrics," Dr. Barnes believes. "Their wisdom and support has
made my career fulfilling. I am also fortunate to have the
support of a caring, sincere and inquisitive patient population
who has continued to enlighten me. I only hope that my patients
have learned as much from me as I have from them."
